Georgetown : Members of the Sea Defence Board today, received their letter of appointment at a simple yet significant ceremony held in the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson’s boardroom, Kingston.
Minister Patterson in delivering a charge to the board’s members indicated that he wishes to see them play a greater role in protecting the country’s sea defence and shore protection.
To ensure that the board conducts its work more effectively, a new sea defence policy is currently before the Cabinet for approval, he said.
The thrust of the new policy will see the board becoming a focal point on sea defence issues, as previously that responsibility was in the hands of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), along with regional bodies.
Minister Patterson told the board that the government would like to see not just the actual structures being protected, but ingress and egress along with the boundaries around the sea defence.
“Unfortunately there have been cases where persons and businesses and companies for one reason or the other have ended up erecting structures or blocking access to egress, to our pumps or our sea defence facilities,” Minister Patterson explained.
The new board is therefore expected to place particular emphasis on ensuring the entire sea defence and its boundaries (ingress and egress) is not compromised deliberately as it has been noted that persons are building 50 feet from the center line of such structures. This is against the regulations.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson congratulated the members of the board on their appointment, and charged that they cooperate as they are all working in the interest of all Guyanese to ensure that those persons residing along the coastline do enjoy the good life.
