Sir Elliott Belgrave 81, was sworn in as the new Governor General of Barbados in the Senate Chamber yesterday evening.
The new Governor General shed a tear as he address a packed Senate with tales about his journey from his humble beginings to the highest office in Barbados,
Sir Elliott, a former prosecutor and High Court Judge regaled the audience with tales of the sacrifices his parents and seven siblings none of who are alive today.
He told his well wishers in the Senate and the wider listership on radio and television, Barbados was a land of tolerance, respect, and racial harmony, where everyone irrespective of their humble orgins, creed or class, has the opportunity to develop to their true potential.
"My elevation to this high office his prove that this statement is no wanton boast, as Nelson Mandela, among others, has said it is not where one starts that matters but where one finishes", Sir Elliott said.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Chief Justice Marson Gibson, Leader of the Opposition Owen Arthur ,Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators and members of the diplomatic corps attended the swearing ceremony.
