Georgetown : Guyanese all around the country are now able to receive medical care at the premier institution, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), in an environment that is much improved as a result of the operation of the new $1.6B in-patient facility.
The new wing of the hospital which began operations last month is slated to be officially commissioned on Monday, November 21.
The new $1.6B facility offers significant relief to both patients and staff in the receipt and delivery of services which were being done in cramped conditions, and is an indication of the support given by the Administration towards continuously enhancing the health sector.
214 beds are already in the new wing where patients from all the various out-patient wards occupy rooms with 4 to 6 beds.
In an effort to ensure the facility is adequately manned 65 doctors and 60 nurses were identified to deliver care. The existence of the new in-patient facility is expected to ease the overcrowding that previously existed.
With the relocation of patients to the new wing, GPHC has adjusted its rules and visitation hours for patients’ family and friends. Relatives would not be permitted to take any eatables into the ward, and there is a strict two-relative per patient (at any one time) rule and children below 12 years old will not be permitted on the wards.
