New motion filed by Stanford’s attorneys

Antigua: Ponzi schemer, Allen Stanford’s, attorneys have filed a new motion to delay the start of the January 23 trial, after being ordered by US District Judge, David Hittner, to remain on the job when they filed a motion to withdraw from the case because of budget restrictions which were hampering their effectiveness., according to a report in the Antigua Observer.

The attorneys have now asked, in this new motion, for a continuance on the basis that a non-attorney member of the defence team will not be available on that date. Judge Hittner said that request could be argued this week at a pre-trial hearing.

The judge previously denied a request by Stanford’s attorneys for the trial date to be delayed by three months also denied motions by the defence to throw out the case on constitutional grounds.

Stanford is accused by US authorities of engaging in a massive US $7 billion Ponzi scheme involving his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank (SIB).
