Georgetown : Newly-appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Ernst Noorman, presented his Letters of Credence to President Donald Ramotar, and vowed to improve the good relationship between the two governments.
Receiving the ambassador, President Ramotar offered his best wishes to His Majesty of the Netherlands, Willem – Alexander, adding that Guyana has always “placed much value on its relations with your country, and it is my hope that through your appointment we can advance the traditional bonds of friendship and cooperation which have preserved these relations”.
The expertise of the Netherlands in managing water and maritime technology is recognised by Guyana, and the continued collaboration in this regard would be a welcome development, particularly given its legacy locally with the protective seawalls and kokers, which are still visible today and more relevant than ever, in the face of climate adaptation and mitigation measures, President Ramotar stated.
Initiatives that would bring the business communities closer, and “expand trade links”, would also be welcome, the president noted. Guyana is also ready to partner with the Netherlands or any other country committed to the principles and purposes of the United Nations, President Ramotar explained. “We look forward to working with the Netherlands in the international arena to continue to contribute to ongoing efforts, to find solutions for critical challenges such as extreme poverty and food security”.
The Guyana Government, the Head of State emphasised remains “fully committed to ensuring that our elections are conducted in a fair and transparent manner”.
Ambassador Noorman, in his remarks, said that the two countries shared a common history, which is still visible locally in the names of locations such as Uitvlugt and New Amsterdam. Given the Netherlands’ history of engineering to combat flooding and water control efforts, it stands ready to assist Guyana in this regards, the ambassador added.
He noted that given Guyana’s efforts to diversify its economy, he will “draw the attention of the business community” from his country along with others such as Aruba and Curacao to the possibilities in this country. His country, he added, stands ready to contribute to peace, justice and development, as it presents itself as a candidate for the Non-Permanent United Nations Security Seat for the 2017 to 2018 term. He asked that Guyana support this quest.
It was noted by the ambassador, that President Ramotar made it clear how important food security is, during his last presentation to the UN and his country supported this call as, “You’ll find us at your side, at the United Nations for this theme”. He said that his country recognises that fact the Guyana is only one of 17 countries to be recognised by the Food and Agriculture Oganisation (FAO) for meeting the goal of reducing hunger by half and improving the nutrition of it people.
The announcement by the president that Guyana will host General and Regional Elections on May 11 was also welcomed by the ambassador. “May I extend my wish for transparent and peaceful elections and a prosperous and harmonious future for the nation and people of Guyana”.
