Georgetown: The Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) has elected Simone Morris-Ramlall as its new President at their Annual General Meeting recently. The outgoing President was Emily Dodson.
The Office bearers for the year 2013-2014 are as follows: President: Simone Morris-Ramlall, Vice President: Sadie Amin, Secretary: Ramona Rookhum, Treasurer: Keshia Chase, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer: Annette Singh and Committee Members: Jaya Singh-Backreedy, Chandrawattie Persaud, Hannifah Jordan and Donna Bailey.
The new President was admitted to practice in Guyana in 2000. She served at the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as State Counsel from 2000 to 2004 then at the Attorney General (AG) Chambers from 2004 to 2005. She was thereafter engaged in Private practice from 2005 to 2009. She is currently the Managing Attorney at Legal Aid where she started her service as Deputy Managing Attorney in 2009. She is also currently serving on the Domestic Violence Oversight Committee and Sexual Offences Task Force.
According to the GAWL, it remains committed to the motto of Women supporting Justice and Equality and the new year should see many more outreach activities with the women lawyers reaching out to educate women all over the country on their legal rights and freedoms and access to the Courts.
