Georgetown : Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett said the relationship between Guyana and neighbouring Venezuela has never been better, an achievement in which the late President Hugo Chavez played a critical role.
“I have no fear on how our relations with continue, in fact I think it will only get stronger,” Minister Rodrigues-Birkett posited.
Both Guyana and Venezuela subscribe to the good offices process of the UN Secretary General on border matters and both countries will continue to work closely in this regard.
With regards to trade, the Government of Guyana is currently working on a new agreement for 2013 for the exportation of rice with Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the Spanish-speaking State has also expressed an interest in buying more of Guyana’s products including construction materials. Minister Rodrigues-Birkett said that discussions in this regard are continuing. A meeting was set for March 12; however, with the death of the late President Chavez, a new date will have to be fixed.
Over the last three years, Venezuela has been the major export market for Guyana’s paddy and rice, accounting for approximately 60 percent of total export.
