New water production facility to benefit 6,440 customers in Region 3

Dr.-Van-West-CharlesGeorgetown: Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Chief Executive, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles met with Region 3 Chairman, Julius Faerber to discuss plans to improve the water service provided to GWI customers of Region 3.

The Chief Executive stated that while there are a number of GWI production sites experiencing challenges, the company is currently devising a plan to improve the level of service provided to communities in Region 3.

‘We are exploring a number of options including rehabilitating decommissioned well stations,’ stated Dr. Van West-Charles, ‘with additional well stations serving the distribution system, there will be a significant increase in the level of service available to customers’.  

The Chief Executive also discussed the Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructure Improvement Programme (WSSIIP), funded by the Government of Guyana, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Caribbean Investment Facility (CIF) of the European Union (EU).  This programme will result in the construction of a state-of-the-art water treatment facility at Uitvlugt in Region 3.

Following the completion of the new water treatment facility, in excess of 6,440 GWI customers will benefit from enhanced water service.

‘Our aim is to improve the level of service provided to customers as well as the quality of water,’ stated the Chief Executive, ‘with a new water treatment facility at Uitvlugt, customers in Region 3 can anticipate a distinct improvement in GWI’s overall service’.

In addition, the WSSIIP will also incorporate the construction of septic tanks in communities within Region 3 to aid in the improvement of public health within the Region. 

Dr. Van West-Charles extended a hand of partnership to the Region 3 Chairman and emphasized that GWI is focused on building a relationship with all the communities served by the utility.  He also pledged that GWI personnel will be available at any time should there be an emergency regarding water service within the Region.
