St. John’s, Antigua: Political hopeful on the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) card Senator, Arthur Nibbs, said he is keen on defeating the incumbent United Progressive Party-aligned Barbuda Peoples Movement (BMP) candidate Trevor Walker in the next general elections, according to a report in the Antigua Observer.
Nibbs, who lost the two most recent general elections, said he took a lot for granted going into the polls. This time around he plans to take his politics to the doorsteps of every home in Barbuda before elections, which are constitutionally due in 2014, the Observer said.
“This time around I expect to contact every single voter by going house by house, getting their opinion, recording their views and continuing to work on that right up until the elections,” Nibbs told OBSERVER Media.
He said in the past his party has been laid back, relying on the belief they have a steady support base that would eventually outgrow the BPMs.
“I expect to go to every single elector on this island to take the message of change, and change is seeing a developed Barbuda where we can take care of ourselves rather than relying on central government,” Nibbs said.
In the 2004 elections, Walker of the BPM and Nibbs, who was then the representative for the Barbuda People’s Movement for Change (BPMC), both won 400 votes. In a rerun of the election Walker received 408 votes Nibbs won only 394. Walker retained the seat in 2009, beating Nibbs by one vote, the Observer reported.
