Georgetown : Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon responded to a statement reportedly made by Opposition Leader, David Granger at a recent press conference to the effect that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is in a state of crisis.
He explained that while the scheme does have problems, exaggerating and proffering fallacious statements such as it being in dire crisis, “is downright uncharitable and is foisting all sorts of wrong impressions in the public domain.”
He added that there are certain indicators that constitute a crisis; however, the NIS has been paying out billions of dollars every month in benefits religiously without being harassed or cajoled.
“We honour statutory obligations, I dare say if that is how you define a crisis, then I do not know where crises don’t exist,” Dr. Luncheon stated.
In September, the Scheme celebrated its 44th anniversary. Last year, President Donald Ramotar had given his assurance that his Government will not allow NIS to go into any kind of crisis, and it will work hard to ensure that people’s pensions are protected.
