No oil spill says Energy Ministry after examining discoloured water

Port-of-Spain: The Ministry of Energy says the spillage of an oil-like substance off the Western coast of Gaspar Grande on Monday was not in fact oil.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) and the Energy Ministry says an aerial survey of the area was conducted yesterday morning.

Both agencies confirm that there was no oil but two patches of sheen were observed.

The statement says there is no need for further clean up as the sheens will be broken up through natural process.

In that regard, the oil spill response has been stood down, however surveillance by the Coast Guard and the Ministry of Energy will continue.

On Monday LNG vessels reported the presence of an oil-like substance in the coastal waters.
