Mahaica : Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, technical officers from the Ministry took a first hand look at the current situation at the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC), to check on the integrity of the dam, following speculations about over topping and breaches in sections.
Presently there are unusual rainfall countrywide mostly on the coastland which brought the EDWC to a threatening level, and in order to prevent overtopping and breaches, the Ministry opened the Maduni sluice during low tides to drain water all week.
Minister Ramsammy pointed out, the ministry has been constantly monitoring the conservancy to ensure that the dam’s integrity is not compromised.
Mahaica/Mahaicony and Abary remains a major concern since “the river water is continuing to rise and hoping for good weather the Maduni sluice will be closed and all the excess water in those areas will be drained off into the Atlantic,” Minister Ramsammy pointed out.
Meanwhile the current height of the conservancy is 58.45 GD and this will reduce to 58 GD, since water is being drained through the Maduni sluice. The conservancy’s normal level is about 58 GD to 58.5 GD.
