Georgetown: Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn says he will not recommend his Cabinet colleagues that Guyana lower the 15 percent Travel Voucher Tax that was put forward by the A Partnership of National Unity (APNU.)
Caribbean Airlines and LIAT are the only carriers servicing the Guyana route. Benn explained that if the government decides to drop the tax it would affect the continuation and operation of the two airports. The opposition recommended that the Government travel voucher tax which is a part of the ticket cost, be reduced by 10 percent to help cushion the Guyanese traveling public.
In 2012, when three airlines were competing for passengers, the Government gained 1.1 billion dollars in revenue from the Travel voucher and travel taxes.
