No sense in exporting sugar to Europe says Minister

Bridgetown.

Minister of Agriculture David Estwick thinks it is time for Barbados to stop exporting sugar to Europe and focus on the local and regional markets instead.

Speaking at  a press conference yesterday, at the ministry's Graeme Hall headquarters to update Barbadians on plans for agriculture, water management and food security,  Estwick said it is nonsense to produce a tonne of sugar for $4100 and then sell it on the European market for a mere $980.

"Very, very soon I am going to give a directive once I can get clearance from the Cabinet, that we will look to crease the export of sugar to Europe. It makes no sense", Estwick said.

The Minister said he intended for Barbados to produce sugar for domestic and regional consumption, along with value products, within the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

"It is my intention to change urgently the way the sugar industry is managed", he added.
