The Barbados Egg and Poultry Association is annoyed that the Ministry of Agriculture is contemplating the importation of chicken wings.
According to Carlyle Brathwaite a number of small businesses have suggested that they be allowed to import chicken wings, if Chi ckmout the leading supplier of chicken parts on the island cannot suppy them.
An infuriated Brathwaite told Trakker News , "It is time that we make sure that the egg and poultry industry be protected in the same manner that other industries are being protected".
He made the point that many Barbadians are not aware that chicken wings are 83 percent fat and 17 percent meat, a little know fact that could lead to lifestyle diseases in the long term.
Brathwaite stated that back in 2000 when chicken and turkey wings were allowed into the country, it brought the poultry down from $9.2 million down to $7 million.
"Do we want that to happen again? Do we want to see our farmers going home and cannot provide for their families or are we going to stand up and fight? Brathwaite asked.
