Norman Whittakar is new Local Government Minister

Georgetown : Newly sworn in Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker said his first mission is to host the long delayed local Government elections.
Minister Whittaker echoed these sentiments after his inauguration to the ministerial post at the Office of the President minutes after taking the oath before President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday.
“This is the party’s wish, our Presidential Candidate Mr Donald Ramotar made that clear when he addressed the private sector at the Pegasus, that is that we would like to have, local government elections following the reform at the earliest opportunity,” Minister Whittaker said.

Asked about his involvement in City Hall particularly in light of its many challenges financially and otherwise, Minister Whittaker expressed the view that there is need for serious monitoring and control of expenditures and emphasis on debt collection,  Minister Whittaker said.
Some of his immediate priorities will be to familiarise himself with officers who have served the local government system for several years and shared his vision for greater people involvement in the development process.
