NP workers walk off job citing safety concerns

Port of Spain: Workers at the National Petroleum Company have walked off the job after an early morning heat explosion.

An oil blending boiler top exploded at NP's headquarters off Beetham Highway around 8 a.m.. But that's not what has workers worried.

Union representatives say after the explosion went off someone tried to pull the alarm but it failed to go off since it has been down for repairs for several days now.

Workers were only aware of the explosion when they saw black smoke coming from the area.

The Oilfield Workers Trade Union says workers lives are at risk and they will not be returning to the job until the alarms are fixed.

Workers remain on the outskirts of the building at this time while NP officials and Occupational Health and Safety officers are investigating.
