Georgetown : As the Ministry of Health continues to work towards strengthening the capacity of its medical staff and allow for a better quality of care for its people, Professor Mina Singh, PhD, of York University, Canada, who is currently visiting Guyana, is working with the Tutor Development Education Programme in collaboration with the Ministry to train nursing tutors.
Over the past two months, 20 tutors were trained remotely via Skype. The main focus areas include; Philosophy of teaching and learning, Development of teaching guides and Measurement and Evaluation.
Professor Singh is currently facilitating intensive workshops, which began on November 19. On November 24 and 25 a two-day workshop for Nursing tutors from Georgetown School of Nursing and New Amsterdam School of Nursing was held, while on November 26 and 27 a similar workshop will be held for Nursing tutors from Linden at the Charles Roza School of Nursing.
Dr. Singh has also made a substantial donation of updated text books, as well as Human Anatomy mannequins for the Nursing Schools valued at over CAD$21,000.
She is a faculty member in the School of Nursing at York University and was the Coordinator of the Programme Evaluation Unit from 2011-2013, at the York Institute for Health Research. She was nominated for the Dean’s Award of Excellence, Faculty of Health Research Award – Late career (2012).
She received a National Nursing Education Scholar award in November, 2012 to promote research through inquiry, mentorship, and dissemination.
In addition, she also received the 2014 Accreditation Reviewer Excellence award from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.
She has been a programme evaluator for over 14 years and has conducted several types of evaluations (input, process, outcome and impact) and has developed a methodological framework which is being used internationally and nationally for evaluation.
Dr Singh has presented a multitude of workshops on programme evaluation: logic model, types of evaluations, mixed methods, photo voice, among others and is well published.
