Official opening of Parliament this afternoon

Bridgetown.

Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave will deliver the Throne Speech this afternoon at 4 p.m to ushering in new the 2013 to 2018 parliamentary term.

The Speech will be presented in the ornate Senate Chamber before current and former Members of Parliament, senators, their spouses and guests, those on the Precedence List, including judges, permanent secretaries and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

Prior to the start of the formal proceedings, the House of Assembly and the Senate will elect their presiding officers.

Speaker of the House of Assembly in the last parliamentary term Michael Carrington, is expected to be re-elected to the post with Mara Thompson the first woman to hold the post of Deputy Speaker.

James Paul, who served as Chairman of Committes in the last Parliament will be returned to the post.

In the Senate President-designate Kerryann Ifill will begin her first full term in office after being chosen in 2012 to complete the term of the ailing Sir Branford Taitt, who died on February 15 this year. Dean Emeritus Harold Crichlow will serve as Deputy President.
