Guyana Elections Commission prepare workers for 2011 elections.

Georgetown-  The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) commenced a two-day Training Session which was designed specifically for the selection of Managers and Field Staff to work during the Claims and Objections exercise in preparation for the General and Regional Elections – 2011. According to a release from Gecom, the training session, which is being implemented at the Registration Areas level commenced on January 22-23, 2011, and catered for the training of persons to work within the Wismar , Mackenzie and East Bank Demerara Registration Areas. The venues where training was done are McKenzie High School , the Linden Foundation Secondary School , the Silver City Secondary School , the Soesdyke Primary School and the Providence Primary School .  
The training is aimed at equipping the participants with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitude to conduct the Claims and Objections exercise and to enable them to become acquainted wit the relevant Forms which must be completed in processing the respective types of registration transactions which could be done during the exercise. This includes (i) the ability to accurately fill out the various Forms, (ii) the development of skills to take good quality photographs, (iii) the development of skills to take good quality fingerprints, and (iv) to be able to check the source documents for authenticity.

GECOM will be conducting the mandatory Claims and Objections exercise regarding entries in the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. This exercise is scheduled to commence on April 4 and to conclude on Saturday May 20, 2011The Commission will announce the qualifying date for determining persons who would be 18 years or over, and could become registered during this Claims and Objections exercise. Such persons must be Guyanese citizens by birth, descent, naturalization or are citizens from a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for one year or more preceding the qualifying date. Accordingly, persons who meet these criteria would be required to check the PLE and:- make a claim to entry on the Official List of Electors (OLE) if they will be eligible to vote at the upcoming elections and their names are not on the PLE; apply for a transfer if they have changed their addresses since they were registered;
apply for a change of name or correction if they have changed their names since they were registered, or if there is incorrect information on their National ID Cards; or object to the inclusion of the name of any person who is suspected not to have met the eligibility requirements for such inclusion
