Georgetown – Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud last evening said that Guyana is recognised as a global player in issues such as climate change, notwithstanding the size of its economy and population. He was at the time addressing members of the National Assembly during then second day of the 2011 budget debate.
Referring to the 4.6 percent projected growth of the economy as stated in the budget, he reminded that this projection is ahead of the 3.3 percent projected by the World Bank for the entire region. This he said, points to Guyana’s progress in making rapid economic and social development for its people.
He refuted claims of corruption surrounding the discussions taking place with the establishment of the Guyana Redd Investment Fund (GRIF) involving the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was by signed Norway.
“This budget can be described as a people’s budget, because the investments that we are making are in our people’s welfare and development. The expenditures that we make on every single item are about improving the welfare of all our people,” he said.
Minister Persaud posited that in terms of moving Guyana forward, Government recognises that agriculture is and will continue to be an important player in the economic transformation process. As such a lot of emphasis has been placed on the restructuring of traditional agricultural activities in the 2011 budget.
