Georgetown – Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green who is vice chairman of central state planning committee for the Launch of the International Year of People of African Descent, in an exclusive interview with TrakkerNews this morning said the launch has been postpone from Sunday January 16th to Wednesday January 19th.
He said the shift of dates was done to accommodate the President and at this point of time no public advisory was sent out. This he finds is insensitive and disrespectful.
Chairman of the African Culture Development Association (ACDA) Eric Phillips told TrakkerNews, his organization feels such a launch should have been dedicated to African people and should not postpone to facilitate the President. He pointed out that if the Government wants to lead in the key note address, there are many Africans in the cabinet.
He pointed out that this is what the United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon said in his message for this occasion “the event aims to strengthen the political commitment to eradicate discrimination against those of African descent, who are among the most affected by racism, and have been denied their basic rights to quality health and education around the world.
The initiative also aims to promote respect for diversity and cultural heritage."
General Secretary of the All African Guyana Council Jonathan Adams said there is a lack of information by the Government of the launching and even what the programme is all about. He said the shift of date of facilitate the President is arrogance by this Government and the United Nations is clear on its mandate that the actions should be the benefit of the African people.
