Georgetown- Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh said that during 2011, 8.2 billion dollars will be spent on roads and 1.9 billion on bridges including a number major trans-formative projects.The sum of 1.7 billion dollars has been budgeted for the completion of 35 kilometers of all weather roads in the Blackbush Polder area and 19 kilometers in the Canjie area, This the Minister said will provide permanent accessibility and reduce transportation cost. To further enhance urban and suburban mobility, ease transportation cost and traffic congestion, Government has allocated the sum of 1.6 billion dollars for the rehabilitation and improvement of the Sheriif street/ Mandela road, access road to the main airport, and the continuation of the four lane highway from Providence to Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara. Additionally, Government this year will complete the feasibility study of a four lane highway from Betterhope to Goldengrove and the East Coast of Demerara. To maintain the critical linkage between regions 3 and 4, the sum of 550 million is budgeted to maintain and upgrade Guyana’s largest floating bridge, the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
