Skeldon, Berbice-The Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will participate in the signing of the Skeldon Declaration and opening of the first White Zone on Monday. The Hon. Priya Manickchand, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Hon. Robert Persaud, Minister of Agriculture, Cabinet members, and Stakeholders will be participating in this event.
The Skeldon Declaration is an initiative developed to encourage men and boys to refrain from abusing women and children. Men and boys, on the day of the event, will sign a pledge to this effect. The White Zone is a safe heaven for persons who require immediate safety and support having suffered, or is in danger of suffering abuse in their homes. Temporary shelter will be provided at these locations, and the relevant authorities will be contacted for further action. These events, being launched in Region 6, will be taken to communities across the coast and inland regions over the next 12 months.
