Opposition Leader discredits assassination plot after being briefed on “evidence”

Port-of-Spain: A slap in the face for the government today as Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley completely discredited its claims of an assassination plot against the prime minister and three of her cabinet colleagues.

Dr Rowley today saw first hand the information unearthed by law enforcement officers and says he is convinced now more than ever the claims of such a threat are unfounded, and the actions taken are overkill, and simply in search of political sympathy.

Dr Rowley made it clear that he was not at liberty to breach the confidential details of the alleged plot but from the evidence put to him he is now convinced that there is nothing that the public did not already know.

The information presented to him he said had been in the public domain for a long time.

His position on the matter has now brought into question  the prime minister's statement that the threat was indeed reprisal for government's clamp down and dismembering of those responsible for the illegal drug and gun trade, through the State of Emergency.

Dr Rowley is now forced to conclude like many skeptics that the reason for the flamboyant announcement was  to seek support for an extension of the State of Emergency.

He said National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy owed the nation satisfactory and credible information to justify the action taken being taken. Dr Rowley argued that this could simply be an attempt to arrest people under the detention orders which up until this announcement, it had been unable to do.

What made it worse he said was that the target of the threat was the spokesperson for an unidentifiable threat.

The Opposition Leader is concerned that the entire situation is tarnishing the country's reputation internationally. He is urging government to desist from in his word traumatising the population.
