The Government is calling on Guyanese to carefully study and reject the Parliamentary Opposition’s response to the its crime fighting and prevention measures and national security interventions that have been taken before the National Assembly by the Minister gazzetted with that responsibility, Clement Rohee.
Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing today, said that the Opposition’s rejection of Minister Rohee and as a consequence, their rejection of the Government’s intervention, continue to expose and punish Guyanese citizens, as their actions vicariously embolden criminal elements.
“This absurd position…this posturing essentially presents Guyanese with a catch 22 situation,” the Cabinet Secretary contended.
The statistics provided at the most recently held meeting of the Defence Board showed a five percent increase in gun crimes compared to a similar period in 2012.
Robbery under arms, specifically firearms, has been identified by the Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brummell as the major contributor to that increase.
Meanwhile, the criminal justice system was also thoroughly discussed, particularly those aspects dealing with bail. Dr. Luncheon stated that it is incontrovertible that offenders on bail continue to prey on innocent Guyanese, and that prosecutions are slow.
He noted however, that while the right to bail is assured in Guyana, innocent, unsuspecting citizens too have a right to live without fear for their lives and properties; free from the onslaught of armed criminals.
