Panday in bid to re-enter politics

Couva: Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday is making a return to the political arena.

The founder of the United National Congress (UNC) today revealed that he will lead a full slate of candidates in the party’s next internal elections, due early 2012.

However, although he wants to reclaim ownership of the party he founded, Panday says he will not contest the elections himself but will advise a new team called generation next.

He says the rank and file of the party have been neglected and treated like garbage since the People's Partnership  took office last year.

Panday says over the last year he has been contacted by those whom he calls the rank and file of the party who have asked him to help them re take control. He says the present PP government is being represented as a UNC government when its ideals and practices are obviously noT inline with what the UNC has fought to represent.

Panday says we'll have to wait on nomination day to see who the new candidates are. He was also asked whether he would run in the election if asked by the 'rank and file' to whom he refers, he says he cannot predict the future.
