Georgetown: Restoration works at Parliament Square are expected to commence shortly as the Central Housing and Planning Authority has official received the grant document from the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission (GLSC).
The ownership document was handed over to the agency last week, paving the way for planning and works to commence.
In March of this year, Minister of Housing and Water, the Collin Croal, Chief Executive officer for CHPA and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Andre Ally visited the facility to assess the situation after years of neglect. For a number of years, the facility was under the purview of the Mayor and City Council.
Last year, Cabinet granted approval for the transfer of the area from Mayor and City Council to CH&PA paving the way for GLSC to start processing the ownership document. The CH&PA has already taken physical occupation of the area, which includes the presence of security.
Also, a management committee has been set up to oversee this task and the restoration would include the repairing of the water fountains, as well as, the construction of a new fence and washroom and procurement and installation of new seats and lights for the park. Talks are also being held with other stakeholders as this project gets underway.
Following the completion of the project, persons will have to write directly to CH&PA for permission to use the area for special events, it will also be opened for use by the general public.
