British Virgin Islands: Territorial At-large Representative Archibald Christian, said the Government needs to pay more attention to the handicapped and persons in the community who have social problems, the BVInews.com reported.

“This country is faced with a lot of social challenges now, more than ever before, but in particular the handicapped of this country, we have to ensure that they are afforded all the rights and privileges that people have no handicap are afforded,” Christian said, making his contribution to the 2012 budget debate in the House of Assembly.

The BVInews.com said that Christian noted that the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre is in need of new and proper facilities. He also spoke about the persons with social problems on the streets of the territory.

“The amount of young persons on our streets that have their challenges with alcohol and drug abuse; those who are homeless, we have to pay attention to those people and their needs. We cannot continue to ignore them, because it’s easy to ignore them because when we continue to ignore them, the problems will manifest to a severe situation; we have to arrest those situations,” Christian added.
