Peter PersaudGeorgetown: Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai, announced recently, that Leader of The Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana (TAAMOG), Mr. Peter Persaud has been elected to represent the indigenous people on the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), once it is formally constituted. She made the announcement at a press briefing on May 30 at her Ministry’s Quamina Street, Georgetown office.

Sukhai said Persaud was among other contestants and was named following a call by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointments for the constituencies identified to provide nominees to the ERC.

She formally congratulated him on his selection and expressed her confidence in his ability to be representative of his people.

Each member of the Commission will receive a stipend and travelling allowance to attend meetings of that body, if they reside outside of Georgetown.

The ERC has its own office in Queenstown, Georgetown.

It is a constitutional body established through an undertaking in the Herdmanston Accord and Constitutional Amendment Act of 2000, to serve Guyanese who believe that they are discriminated because of their ethnicity.

The Guyana Constitution provides that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointments, through an agreed on parliamentary consensual mechanism, identify constituencies from civil society to be asked to provide nominees to the ERC.

The process has started and, at the end of it, when the nominations are received from the groups, the Committee will return with the list to the National Assembly.

The nominees with a majority vote will be sent to the President and after his approval the Speaker of the National Assembly will summon a meeting and the nominated persons will elect their chairperson and deputy chairperson for the ERC to begin functioning.
