President of the Barbados Association of Pharmacy David Lewis, is calling for legislation to protect the public from the unregulated dispensing of herbal medicines in Barbados.
According to Lewis, there is a lot interaction between herbal and prescribed medications which can a serve impact if they are used together.
"When people are on anti depressants and using certain herbal preparations, it often synergises those effects and can cause gastrointestinal irritations and other illnesses. These medications have to be managed properly", Lewis told Trakker News.
"A person should not be able to walk into a health shop or even a pharmacy willy nilly and buy these items, we offer patients advice on these medications which workers in health shops are not trained to do", he added.
Lewis is calling for legislation which place the dispensing of these medications under the control of a pharmacist.
