Guyana is home to four of the world’s eight known sea-turtle species – PM

Guyana is home to four of the world's eight known seaturtle species the Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill and the Olive Ridley, which are endangered species. These turtles visit Shell Beach, a 90-mile long stretch of beach, located in the Northwestern Region of Guyana, to lay their eggs. As such, protecting and monitoring nesting beaches, increased awareness and educations, regarding marine turtles, are momentously important to the success of marine turtle conservation.
Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, who is also the Patron of GMTCS, visited the beach for the first time, last Saturday, for the commissioning of the field station and to have an opportunity to view the famous Leatherback turtle.

During his presentation, Prime Minister Hinds indicated that he was appointed a Patron of GMTCS, after calls were made for a Mining Minister to become involved because persons were mining the sea shell, which is abundant along the beach.
