PM leaves for CHOGM in Australia

Port-of-Spain: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar leaves the country today for Australia where she will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which takes place from October 28th to 30th.

The prime minister is the current of Chair of Commonwealth, a position she inherited from her predecessor Patrick Manning, who in turn had taken the position by virtue of this country hosting the last CHOGM in 2009.

Persad-Bissessar will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan, Trade Minister Stephen Cadiz and Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine.

She will be handing over the stewardship to Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia.

It is the first time ever that the chairmanship of the commonwealth switches from one woman leader to another.

The prime minister will also speak at various events, including at the opening address of the Commonwealth Business Forum on October 25.

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran will act as prime minister until her return.
