PM on death threats: “I put my faith in God”

Port-of-Spain: Prime Minster Kamla Persad-Bissessar is standing strong in the face of threats to assassinate her saying she has put her faith in God and the saftey of the country is more important to her.

However, as she and Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs addressed the media at a Diplomatic Centre now heavily fortified with military personnel not much was being told about the alleged plot.

The prime minister has called it an act of treason and linked to the government's efforts to crack down on criminals but she says there is no immediate plan to reinstate the curfew or extend the State of Emergency.

She says that with a crackdown on $1.5 billion in drugs and the seizure of scores of weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition, they expected a reprisal.

The response she says will be tough. The prime minister has contacted the Leader of the Opposition Dr Keith Rowley and has told him that they're willing to share the intelligence with him.

As head of the National Security Council she has advised security forces to keep the country on high alert.

Already the Diplomatic Centre has been fortified by the military. Barri ers have been placed in the driveway to leading up to the main gate manned by armed soldiers and inside soldiers are keeping a bird's eye view from atop a tower.

However Police Commissioner Dwyane Gibbs is saying very little about what prompted the threats.

He says about a dozen persons have been held in this regard.

For the time being the prime minister says she will make no major changes to her shedule and reports that the Attorney General has moved out of his house have been denied.
