PM, Opposition Leader meet President on racial comments

Port-of-Spain: Both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bisessar and Opposition Leader Dr Kieth Rowley have met with President George Maxwell Richards to discuss the racial remarks by the chairman of the Police Service Commission, Nizam Mohammed, who has questioned the racial composition of the hierachy of the police service.

The meeting between the Opposition Leader and the President came hours after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar met with the president. The prime minister admits the PSC chairman and his controversial statements were discussed but said she could not divulge further details.

The prime minister says though she will not allow the nation to become racially divided. The prime minister says that while quoting statistics is harmless, the comments from Mohammed which followed cannot be condoned.

The Opposition Leader is meeting with the media this afternoon to discuss the matter.
