PNC maintains position of non participation in sitting of parliament during official recess.

Georgetown: The People’s National Congress Reform today stated that its members of parliament will not participate in any sitting of the National Assembly, during the Official Parliamentary recess from 10th August to 10th October 2011, except there is a national emergency or some similar circumstances. This position was made clear at the Sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday 4th August 2011 and was explained in a PNCR Press Release of the same date.

Mrs. Clarissa Riehl, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly who, in the absence of the Speaker, is presently carrying out the functions of Speaker, will, however, preside over the sitting of the National Assembly tomorrow, 11th August 2011.  Mrs. Riehl would be discharging her responsibilities as an elected officer of the National Assembly of the Parliament.

The PNC/R added that It is a disgrace after five years, with three months remaining before they demit office, the PPP/C is rushing to pass laws, which are intended to serve the narrow interest of political propaganda for their election campaign and laws which may not even become operational before they demit office.

It is also an affront to the National Assembly and the Standing Committees and Select Committees appointed by it, for the PPP/C to have passed a Motion in the National Assembly to alter the recess period without even the Parliamentary Management Committee considering the matter. The Parliamentary Management Committee, which was established “….to consider and decide on matters relating to the business of the National Assembly….” has been continuously subverted by the Office of the President with the consequence that the Government has been treating the National Assembly as if it is a department of the Office of the President, the party added.
