Georgetown: Guyana's Police Commissioner Henry Greene has requested to be relieved of his duties to facilitate an investigation into the rape allegations made against him.
President Donald Ramotar has reportedly agreed to the request made by Greene in light of rape investigations.
Caribbean Trakker has confirmed that Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brummel has assumed acting in the post of Commissioner pending the investigation.
External assistance from the Ministry of Home Affairs has also been recommended by the President in the investigations in order to expedite them.
Following recent allegations of rape levelled against the commissioner there have been calls from organisations and individuals for him to tender his resignation. The Women's Lawyer Association has called for Greene to step aside to allow for an investigation.
Former Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, is also among those who called for an investigation after reports of the allegation surfaced in the media. Felix at a recent A Partnership for National Unity press briefing pointed out that the embattled commissioner is no stranger to such situations even as he recollected to previous occasions where similar allegations were made. He stopped short of detailing the allegations but did assert that one such incident was more violent than the allegation currently under investigation.
Caribbean Trakker will update as information unfolds.
