Police decide when to use Water Cannon, not me-Rohee

Guyana’s National Security Minister Clemet Rohee, says that decision on when and where to use the recently purchased $37M water cannon, rests with the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force.

“They are the professionals, it is their call…If they decided to take it to Linden it’s their decision not mine.”

The Multi Million dollar water cannon was purchased by the Ministry specifically to deal with crowds and protests, but the Minister bluntly informs that following the purchase of any piece of equipment for the Police Force, it is turned over and the Ministry no longer has an association with it.

“We are finished,” after the handover Rohee said, in reference to his Ministry and added that “these things now rest with the Police for them to use as they see fit.”

Rohee says when the government purchased the water cannon and handed it over to the police, it is then in their jurisdiction to “to decide where, when, and how to use it.”

The Minister says that it is not a case it will not be a case where he will be picking up the phone and issuing directives on when and how to use the water cannon

“That is not the role of a Minister…That is not my role at all….How could I tell them what to do with the water cannon…. we handed over to them.”

The Ministry and Home Affairs minister has come in for intense flak over the fact that the cannon was not used in Linden from day one of the Protests which has already left three dead and dozens injured.
