Georgetown : The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment in conjunction with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) presented the Guyana Police Force (GFC) with an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and two satellite phones, which cost more than $2.5M, to support policing in the E&F Division; the hinterland.
This is the first in a series of support efforts, to be rolled out towards improving the force’s efficiency and effectiveness in the division, in a move to ensure safer and secure mining in the hinterland.
Executive Member GGMC, Dabria Marcus presented the equipment to the Police Commissioner (Acting) Leroy Brummel this morning in the compound of GGMC at Brickdam. Witnessing the presentation was Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud, Permanent Secretary Joslyn Mc Kenzie, President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) Patrick Harding and several officials of the GPF.
Minister Persaud views the Ministry and the commission, as responsible organisations and stakeholders, stepping up to assist an agency that provides crucial and vital services to one of its most important sectors.
“It is one thing for us to say that the police need to do much more, and we have the means of helping the police and we are not doing anything,” Minister Persaud said.
The initiative to donate the equipment to the Force was taken after consultation with E&F Division’s Commander and Assistant Police Commissioner Gavin Primo. The GGMC board and the Ministry have set up a security committee which has been meeting not only with the Police, but with the GDF, the GGDMA and the other stakeholders.
