Police head defends killing suspected bandits

David Ramnarine, Acting Police Commissioner.

Georgetown: Police Commissioner (ag) David Ramnarine has defended his ranks involved in the killing of three suspected bandits on the Kingston seawall last week.

Ramnarine told the media that his ranks acted in accordance with the law by defending themselves after coming under fire.

“The specific details can always be debated but at the end of the day, the evidence is there that they were part of a criminal enterprise. So whatever specific actions they might have played on the day in question; it is inescapable they were part and parcel of an arrangement to commit a criminal act with some serious consequences and I am happy that that has been averted,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ramnarine said it is imperative that the police capture the fourth suspect in the seawall shooting.

He explained that, “the one who got away, he is known, we have some information on him, we have a place, and if we don’t get to him from law enforcement perspective quiet early the information suggests that there may be an act of retribution and I say no more at this point in time.”

As it relates to Kwame Assanah, one of the victims with no apparent criminal record, the acting Top Cop said, “he is by no means the church going type based on the information that we have.”

Those killed in the shootout with the police on Thursday last are, Dextroy “Dutty” Cordis of Grove, EBD, Kwame Assanah of Buxton, ECD and Errol “Dynamite” Adams.

The victims were reportedly trailing a customer who had left the Scotia bank when they were killed.
