Antigua : Police are on the hunt for a young man who stabbed a clothing vendor when he tried to recover a stolen baseball cap – worth less than $50.
The victim, 36-year-old Everette Henry of Potters, is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mount St John’s Medical Centre nursing a punctured lung and can only breathe with the assistance of a ventilator, police said in a press statement.
The incident unfolded at about 3:45 pm Friday on the upper floor of the British American Mall, also known as Benjie’s Mall, on lower Redcliffe Street.
Henry was reportedly sitting inside his clothing store, Stall #12, when one of a group of five young men stole a cap from the store before fleeing.
“I heard a commotion outside and when I looked I saw (Henry) chasing the guy down the escalator shouting ‘Give me my darn cap’. The guy ran down about three steps and jumped down the remaining stairs and (Henry) kept running after him.
“I saw (Henry) return up the stairs shortly afterwards with the cap in his hands,” a witness reported.
The witness said she did not see when the assailant, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, stab Henry in the back.
It is not known what sharp implement was used to injure the businessman.
