Police, military respond as union members storm office; oust union president

Port-of-Spain: There were fists fights and confrontations at the headquarters of the Public Services Association (PSA) today as a virtual coup was staged by suspended members of the union who moved to bring charges against PSA President Watson Duke and suspend General Secretary Nixon Callender.

All members of the union who were suspended by Duke have been reinstated.

Just after noon today several members, general council officials and suspended officers stormed into a general council meeting in a bid to take the reins of the union away from Duke and the meeting soon turned violent.

Some elected executive officers accused the PSA president of mishandling the union affairs.

Police were eventually called in allowing to Duke to exit the meeting but the meeting continued and charges where brought against Duke leading to the suspension of the Callendar.

During this meeting, members of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen stormed in and police were once againg called out. They cordoned off the immediate perimter around the PSA headquarters on Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain and detained members of the Jamaat were engaged in a phsyical fight with members of the general council.
