Port-of-Spain: Police says $1.5 billion in illegal drugs have been seized under the State of Emergency. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson gave an aggregate number today.
He says if the State of Emergency had no other success the amount of drugs taken off the street was a major victory for the police. He has warned of drug smuggling submarines that are targeting our waters.
At a training seminar for narcotic officers hosted by the European Union, ACP Richardson added, that while the dent has been large drug smugglers are developing new ways to ship contraband through our waters.
ACP Richards encouraged the law enforcement officers to not only put what they learn into practice but also to forge valuable ties with fellow law enforcers.
It is hoped the training with strengthen the drug investigation and interdiction capabilities of law enforcement without the cover of a State of Emergency.
