Police Service Commission to be given more attention

Georgetown: The constituting of the Police Service Commission remains at the level of the Parliamentary Committee on appointments and Government has urged that this matter is given more attention in the National Assembly.

This was recently disclosed by State Minister, Joseph Harmon, who informed that the Committee has met and discussed recommendations, which, as is customary, will be sent to President David Granger for approval.

Minister Harmon acknowledged the importance of having the Commission constituted in the shortest possible time.

The Parliamentary Committee on Appointments is chaired by Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton.

Meanwhile, the Minister said that following the examination of all circumstances, the President will select a substantive Commissioner of Police.

David Ramnarine is currently the Acting Commissioner of Police, taking the reins from Seelall Persaud who recently retired.

Minister Harmon has expressed confidence that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) comprises competent officers who fit this position and in due time a decision will be taken.
