Georgetown : Newly appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Paul Slowe today said the commission will be looking at persons who are competent and can command the respect of the officers and the public to present to President David Granger as candidates for the position of Police Commissioner.
He was speaking following the swearing-in of the PSC by the president at State House.
The commission is tasked with presenting the list of candidates for the positions of Police Commissioner and Deputy Police Commissioners to the President, who will then host consultations with Slowe and the Leader of the Opposition prior to making the appointments.
Now that the commission is sworn in, Slowe said matters such as the fulfilment of constitutional mandate, promotions and discipline within the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be thoroughly examined.
He noted that there is the culture of disciplinary matters pending for extended periods, a situation which needs to be seriously addressed, “to ensure that the process of discipline is very smooth and efficient.”
Responding to criticisms by the Opposition Leader, relating to his suitability for the post, Slow said he brings to the table discipline, professionalism and measures to deal with corruption.
President Granger, in his remarks this morning, said it is expected that the commission will be able to competently assist the Police Force in efficiently executing the Government’s Security Sector Reform strategy.
Slowe, a former Assistant Commissioner of Police, is a recipient of the Discipline Service Medal (D.S.M) for distinguished service in the area of Law Enforcement.
Slowe holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Public Management from the University of Guyana and is a graduate of the Police Staff College in the United Kingdom, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy.
