Port of Spain: There is word this morning that police officers are planning to stay away from work over the next two days.
While the law forbids them to strike, word is that a number of officers plan to take two days sick leave today and tomorrow. The action comes after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar insisted last week that her government can offer them no more than a five per cent increase on their salaries.
The officers are demanding more.
Between last night and this morning, e-mails and text messages began circulating among the ranks calling for the protest action.
The Police Social and Welfare Association say it has not sanctioned the action but says officers will not be performing extra duties if the government is not prepared to negotiate.
The Association is warning also that this could impact on security for Carnival.
