Bridgetown.
Poor timing says Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley, in responds to a rumour that promoters are planning to stage a show featuring international Barbadian singing sensation Rihanna and American hip hop star Jay-Z, during the Crop Over Festival.
Last week Opposition Member of Parliament Mia Mottley, stated in the House of Assembly that a show featuring Rihanna and Jay-Z will be held on August 4.
Lashley insists no one has hled discussions with the Ministry of Culture or the National Cultural Foundation about such a show.
He stated while people are attracted to Crop Over, he would prefer that events which could offer competition to Barbados' major festival be held after it has ended.
"Given the fact that our local individuals, particularly those who plan our calypso tents invest significantly in the festival, my preference is that those events which may be planned by international artistes and international promoters are done outside of Crop Over, leaving the festival for our local promoters", Lashley said.
The Minister said he will not be part of any activity which will derail the relationship between his ministry and the Crop Over stakeholders.
