Georgetown : Members of the Port Mourant Cricket Club presented with a quantity of cricket gear which was donated by a group of residents from the community who live in the diaspora. Along with the cricket gear, a quantity of books was also donated to the community's library. The group is lead by Mr. Bhola Ramsundar.
The donation was made to the community in the presence of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony; Regional Chairman, David Armogan, Member of Parliament, Faizal Jaffarally and members of the Port Mourant Cricket Club over the weekend.
Minister Anthony expressed satisfaction that overseas based Guyanese found it fit to give back to their community. These efforts, he noted should be applauded and encouraged.
Minister Anthony noted that in the revitalisation of community sports, there is a need for leadership, and called on the community to not only use the ground for sports, but for other activities that are beneficial to all residents.
The Minister highlighted that three hundred million dollars has been invested for the development of community grounds. In Region Six, 28 grounds are receiving support.
Meanwhile, the Regional Chairman noted that the community ground has a rich tradition and it is evident that the youths are working towards maintaining it.
He emphasised that the contributions being made indicate that the donors have a sense of pride and belonging when it comes to the village's development.
Jaffarally applauded the group for their tangible support which would boost what already exists at the club. He highlighted that Berbice was once the mecca for West Indian cricket players, and this was due to their dedication and discipline.
