Port workers return to work after three-day shutdown

Port-of-Spain: An impasse that shut down the port of Port-of-Spain over the last three days is over as workersresumed operations at 3pm after staying off the job over wage negotiations that were not working out in their favour.

Since the protests began on Friday, all containers at the port have not been cleared and businessmen from the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturer's Association and the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association have expressed their frustration at the situation, giving rising costs.

Since the industrial action there have been marathon talks between the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union and Port Management, with Transport Minister Devant Maharaj intervening as much as he could to bring a speedy resolution.

Today though during a news conference both sides appeared to have found common ground, with Union President Michael Annisette assuring that workers will now stay on the job.
