A Survey of Living Conditions conducted between January to April 2010, has discovered that persons living below the poverty line in Barbados has double, since the last study on living conditions and poverty was undertaken over a decade ago.
This was discosure was made by the Minister of Social Care Steve Blackette, during a Ministerial statement on the preliminary findings of the Country Assessment of living conditions in the Houseof Assembly yesterday.
Blackette said 19.3 of percent of Barbadian individuals in 15 percent of national household had an income below the poverty line.
He also revealed that 9.1 percent of persons and just under 7 percent of households on the island are living below the indigence line.
Blackette explained the indigence line or the food poverty line is the annual minimun cost of the food basket (MCFB) while the poverty line is theMCFB plus non food items.
The Minister said the survey found the average per captia indigence line for Barbados has been established at Bds $3970 while the overall poverty line stans at Bds 7861.
